Outlook Web Access (OWA) - 'Problem With This Website's Security Certificate' Message

Note: These instructions apply to Microsoft Internet Explorer v8.

When using Outlook Web Access (OWA), you may encounter an error message warning you about a problem with the websites security certificate.

This is nothing to worry about. Usually, secure websites have their certificates 'signed' by a recognised authority. This can cost several hundred pounds and isn't essential for a small business with only a few users accessing their mails on the move.

You can add OWA's certificate to your web browser manually which will allow you to skip this warning in future.

  • Click the red "Certificate Error" button near the address bar.
  • On the pop-up window, click "View Certificates"
  • In the "Certifcate" window, click "Install Certificate"
  • In the "Cerificate Import Wizard" window, click "Next >"
  • Leave "Automatically select the certificate store.." radio button selected, and click "Next >"
  • Click "Finish" to complete the wizard.
  • Answer "Yes" when asked "Do you want to install this certificate?"
  • Click "OK" twice to return to Internet Explorer.
  • Close Internet Explorer and connect to Outlook Web Access again. The error message will no longer be shown.
